Brief Information about Panchakarma and Other Treatments

Vamana

Vamana is the process of induced vomiting using medication. It is commonly performed for alleviating Kapha dosha and, if there is an aggravation of Pitta dosha in the stomach, it is also performed. This process involves administering Snehan (oleation or oil massage) initially, followed by inducing sweating, which helps in transporting the accumulated doshas to the stomach. Vamana is a Panchakarma treatment used for various ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, skin diseases, epilepsy, obesity, eye disorders, ear, nose, and throat disorders, hyperacidity, headache, and chronic diseases. This treatment is usually conducted during the spring season, i.e., March-April (Phalguna-Chaitra). Adequate Snehan (internal and external oleation) and Swedana (sudation) are carried out for five to seven days before the Vamana procedure. Vamana is performed under the supervision of a physician in the morning. After Vamana, complete rest and dietary regulations are necessary as it helps in the elimination of stomach-related doshas.

Virechana

Virechana is the process of eliminating doshas through defecation. This procedure is usually performed for Pitta dosha. It is beneficial for ailments such as piles, gastrointestinal disorders, acidity, diabetes, paralysis, and abdominal diseases. For maintaining health, Virechana should be performed during the autumn season, i.e., September-October. Before Virechana, three to seven days of Snehan (internal and external oleation) and Swedana (sudation) are administered. Virechana is typically performed in the morning under the guidance of a specialist. After Virechana, it is essential to follow complete rest and adhere to the prescribed diet by the doctor.

Basti

Basti refers to the administration of medicinal substances through the rectal route. This treatment is primarily used for Vata dosha. The colon is considered the primary seat of Vata dosha. Basti treatment involves administering medicines through the rectum, allowing for a more effective and rapid control of Vata dosha. Since the entire body is considered the field of activity for Basti, it is used for several disorders such as paralysis, joint pain, recurrent colds, digestive issues, menstrual problems, kidney disease, piles, heart disease, headache, mental disorders, and spinal disorders. There are two types of Basti: Anuvasana Basti (enema with sesame oil or medicated ghee) and Niruha Basti (enema with medicated decoction, oil, honey, and other medicines). According to Ayurveda, Vata dosha is considered the regulator of the body. Therefore, Basti therapy is crucial in addressing Vata dosha and is useful for treating all diseases.

Nasya

Nasya is the administration of medicines through the nasal route. It involves the use of oil, ghee, or medicinal powder. This procedure is specifically used for alleviating Kapha and Vata disorders.

Rakta Mokshana

We are all aware of the importance of blood in our body. If the blood becomes impure, it can lead to various diseases such as leprosy, skin diseases, headaches, bleeding from the stool, frequent abscesses, epilepsy, and bleeding from the body, among others. Rakta Mokshana is a beneficial treatment for such disorders. According to scientific principles and medical supervision, blood is extracted from the veins and through leech therapy.

Pinda Sweda / Patrapotali

This treatment involves tying a bundle of medicinal herbs cooked in herbal decoctions and milk in a special manner and massaging it over the painful area or the entire body. This type of treatment is used for conditions such as joint pain, spondylitis, paralysis, arthritis of muscles and bones, and bone diseases. Pinda Sweda is also known as Navarakizhi.
